The stars have begun to align for US car enthusiasts now that the 25-year window lines up with Japan’s golden era of cars. For those patient enough to wait two and a half decades, the 25-year rule was the only beacon of hope to owning automotive forbidden fruit. Today, importers need to perform expensive crash testing to prove non-USDM cars are safe enough to enter the United States, or obtain an official letter from a manufacturer saying they’re “substantially similar” to those officially sold in the US.īut there was one small concession made to car enthusiasts within the Imported Motor Vehicle Safety Compliance Act: any car can enter the US, fully exempt from federal safety and emissions standards, so long as it’s 25 years old (according to the date of manufacture, not the model year). In 1988, the Motor Vehicle Safety Compliance Act was passed, making it virtually impossible for importers to bring non-USDM cars into compliance. Unsurprisingly, automakers didn’t like losing US sales to this workaround, and in the late ’80s, Mercedes-Benz led a lobbying effort to stifle the importing of gray-market cars. This way, a car buyer in the US could have a Euro-market trim - often at a substantial savings - even after spending thousands to import the car from overseas and modifying it to comply with US regulations. This, in addition to a then-strong US dollar, led thousands of foreign-car buyers to the “gray market.” Gray-market cars were bought in Europe, shipped to the US and then brought into compliance with US standards in shops. This meant some models and trims - many of which were deemed more desirable by enthusiasts - weren’t sold here because manufacturers thought the profits wouldn’t justify the added expenses. Because the US has its own standards for emissions and safety, these offerings from European automakers had to be engineered specifically for the United States domestic market (USDM). As domestic manufacturers struggled to compete with imports, demand for European cars from brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW was growing. Although Japan’s bubble economy had burst by 1992, its halo cars would continue to be produced and sold deep into the decade.Īround the same time that Japan’s economic bubble was inflating, the US automotive market was experiencing its own shift. Some of these cars - like the Honda NSX (known in the US as an Acura) and Mitsubishi 3000GT - were sold stateside, but many remained exclusive to the Land of the Rising Sun. Until this point, most Japanese cars were well-built albeit staid mass-market cars, but now every automaker had a performance car, luxurious land yacht or quirky economy car. Competition between the Japanese automakers only fanned these flames of innovation.Īs such, the Japanese automotive industry experienced a golden age. No niche was too obscure to fill, and no technology was too outlandish to pursue. This prosperous time emboldened Japanese automakers to think bigger, invest heavily in their R&D and chase a growing segment of increasingly wealthy consumers. Toward the end of 1985, after decades of steady economic growth, Japan began to experience an economic bubble driven by a stronger yen, low interest rates and aggressive speculation, resulting in a massive inflation of stock prices and real estate. Over two decades later, thanks to people like Duncan - and an allowance in a 1988 piece of legislation called the Import Motor Vehicle Safety Compliance Act - these cars are finally getting their due. It is a staggering representation of an auto-industry era that was marked by innovation, creativity and excess, and which was long withheld from a generation of American automotive enthusiasts who were unable to legally experience it in person, having to settle for vicarious exposure through video games and movies. His diverse collection of over 600 Japanese vehicles comprises sports cars, kei cars, vans, trucks, luxury cars and even hearses. By Duncan’s estimate, he has the largest collection of Japanese-market cars in North America. In fact, as of writing, he has 150 of them, along with hundreds of other Japanese cars and trucks from the ’80s and ’90s, parked in his warehouse in Christiansburg, Virginia. Today Duncan, now 65 years old, has his Figaro. “I didn’t know at the time that it would take twenty-five years.” “I thought, ‘Man those are cool… I gotta have one,'” says Duncan. It was there he first laid his eyes on the Nissan Figaro concept car: an aggressively retro convertible just over 12 feet long, five feet wide and powered by a one-liter engine putting out barely more than 50 horsepower. Duncan, who had been a dealer of foreign cars since the age of 19, scored a trip to Japan to visit that year’s Tokyo Motor Show. In 1989, Gary Duncan had a seemingly life-altering experience. Walkers can burn 457 calories race walking, which is 116.6% more calories compared to walking at a leisurely pace of 2.5 mph.ĭoing yard work like mowing the lawn burns 18% less calories compared to race walking, but at 387 calories per hour, that’s still more than what you’ll burn by walking a dog. The most effective way to burn the most calories is race walking or walking at a speed of 6 mph or greater. If you wanted to burn 1,000 calories just by walking, you would have to take approximately 23,809 steps. Which means that walking 10,000 steps burns 421.5 calories. Calories burned walking 10,000 stepsĮvery step you take burns approximately. Walking with lower resistance by going down stairs burns 20.97% fewer calories than walking on a flat surface. However, it takes 59.6% longer to burn 2,000 calories walking at a brisk pace of 3.5 mph on a flat surface compared to going uphill at the same speed. Walking uphill burns 58.05% more calories than walking on a flat surface at the same speed over the course of an hour. Calories burned walking uphill vs flat surface vs downstairs Walking at 5 mph takes the shortest time to burn 2,000 calories at only 3.6 hours. This is 26.7% longer in comparison to a brisk walking pace of 3.5 mph. To burn 2,000 calories, a person weighing 155 lbs needs to walk 9.5 hours going at a consistent speed of 2.5 mph. Number of hours of walking to burn 2,000 calories In order to burn 2,000 calories, you will need to increase your walking distance by 301.7%, for a total of 23.7 miles.īurning 1,500 calories requires walking 17.8 miles which is 50.8% further compared to the distance needed to burn 1,000 calories. To burn 500 calories, a person weighing 155 lbs needs to walk 5.9 miles going at a speed of 2.5 mph. It would take you approximately 284.4 minutes to burn 1,000 calories. Walking at 2.5 mph, you burn 3.52 calories for each minute you walk while walking for 30 minutes at the same pace burns 105.5 calories. You burn 166.8% more calories walking 5.0 mph for one hour in comparison to 2.5 mph. Calories burned walking per hourĪ person weighing 155 lbs burns an average of 211 calories per hour when walking at a speed of 2.5 mph. For comparison, see our analysis of calories burned running and calories burned cycling. Note: For consistency, this analysis used data from a person weighing 155 lbs and walking at an average speed of 2.5 mph (16 minutes / mile). Calories burned walking uphill vs flat surface vs downstairs.Walking duration to burn 500, 1,000, 2,000 calories. In fact, activities like walking was the top fitness trend in 2021, so we wanted to analyze just how much walking benefits weight loss and how many calories will walking burn. That intense, jam-packed hour will definitely help you reach your weight-loss goals quicker than just going for a walk.Ĭalculations are based on a 130-pound woman. In order to stay active and enjoy the benefits of exercise, people began getting active outdoors during the pandemic. So even if you have an hour to work out, spend 30 minutes running, 20 minutes doing strength training (muscle mass increases your metabolism, which helps you burn calories faster), and 10 minutes stretching (to help prevent injury and soreness). Jogging burns more calories per minute than walking, so you can lose weight faster by learning to love running - here's an eight-week plan to get you up to speed. The bottom line is that the harder you work, the more calories you'll burn, which is the key to losing weight. A 60-minute walk at 4 mph with a 10 percent incline burns 567 calories! If you'd rather pick up the pace and jog at 6 mph for 30 minutes with a 5 percent incline, then you'll burn 363 calories. Or, if sprinting isn't your thing, add incline. Every minute of sprinting at 8.5 mph not only burns 13 calories (as compared to 4 calories at 4 mph and 9 calories at 6 mph), but will also help diminish belly fat faster. Whether you walk or run, instead of keeping a consistent pace, an even better option is to incorporate speed intervals. But if you tend to walk slower, then you definitely won't burn as many, and if your jogging pace is closer to 7 mph, then you'll make more use of your 30 minutes by jogging. Here's how many you'll burn briskly walking compared to jogging:Ħ0-minute walk at 4 mph (15 minutes per mile): 243 calories burnedĦ0-minute walk at 4.6 mph (13 minutes per mile): 270 calories burnedģ0-minute run at 6 mph (10 minutes per mile): 270 calories burnedģ0-minute run at 6.7 mph (9 minutes per mile): 300 calories burnedīoth the 60-minute walk at 4.6 mph and the 30-minute run at 6.0 mph burn the same number of calories. If you ditch 250 calories from your diet, you'll need to burn 250 with exercise. In order to lose a pound a week, you need to cut out or burn a total of 500 calories a day. Losing weight is all about creating a calorie deficit. 20 Minutes and Done! I’m mounting the subdirectory /share on foobar to my local mountpoint named “x” as a Mac volume named “x”. Nothing surprising: this just works as you’d expect. I start out by using sshfs to mount the remote sshfs foobar:/share x -o volname=x In general, this works great you only need SSH access to the remote host–not SMB, CIFS, or any other standard, but perhaps firewalled, network file sharing protocol.īut, what if the remote filesystem you want to mount is actually a mounted SMB share? You would think it should “just work,” right? It kind of does, sorta. In short, the idea is you use ssh/sftp to connect to a remote system and “mount” its filesystem (using the SSH connection) so that it appears as a mounted volume on your local machine. Thankfully, it’s trivial to install from source. One of the things I’m trying to do is mount remote filesystems on my Mac using MacFUSE and sshfs. Since Homebrew has deprecated MacFuse, the recipe for installing sshfs also does not work. Restart your Mac one last time, to allow the kernel extension to load on boot. Open “System Preferences » Security & Privacy”:.At the end of installation, you should be prompted to enable the kernel extension: Reboot into macOS, under the “Apple” Menu.įollow the normal installation process.Open “Security Policy…” for the startup disk: Select “Startup Security Utility” from Utilities menu: Hold Power/Touch-ID to launch Startup Options. Enable System Extensions (Kernel Extensions)įor this, you will need to reboot into macOS Recovery Mode. Once you have the installer, you can start with the MacFuse installer first, however, if you are starting from scratch, I believe the following order should avoid extra multiple reboots, and possible removal and re-installation of MacFuse. If anyone says otherwise, they are wrong. Also, since MacFuse is properly signed, you do NOT need to disable SIP (System Integrity Protection). This is because Rosetta 2 will not perform it’s translation magic for kernel extensions, and therefore you need the Apple Silicon version. You will need MacFuse of at least version 4 on M1 Macs. Also, because MacFuse is a kernel extension, Apple will require you to explicitly enable the use of kernel extensions, since they can pose a large security threat. Installing MacFuseĮven if you are used to using Homebrew () or MacPorts (), I suggest fetching the installer directly from. This is simply the latest iteration with MacFUSE (4.2.4) on macOS Monterey (12.2.1) on an Apple M1 (Max) chipset, plus a bit on using it with sshfs. It seems that each time Apple releases a new OS version, there are challenges in getting MacFuse installed. MacFUSE, a FUSE module for macOS, has been around in various forms for quite some time. At Big Blue View, we don’t claim to be experts - we are football writers, not capologists. While there’s a chance that sum has increased (or decreased) in subsequent years, if we assume that salary has remained somewhat consistent, it’s reasonable to suggest he’s earned at least $532 million while serving as the commissioner of the NFL.The NFL salary cap remains a mystery to many fans. The commish has had to deal with plenty of headaches since then, but the new contract-which features a number of bonuses stemming from media deals and CBA negotiations-has seemingly paid off for him in a big way.īased on a report that surfaced in 2021, Goodell earned a whopping $63,900,050 per year between 20. In 2017, he signed a five-year extension that went into effect in 2019. Goodell’s salary has been kept somewhat under wraps since the NFL voluntarily forfeited its tax-exempt status in 2015, but if we average out that amount, it’s safe to assume he earned $21.5 million in each of the three years that followed. That includes Spygate, Bountygate, Deflategate, the 2011 player lockout, the 2012 referee lockout, and disciplinary matters stemming from incidents involving players including Michael Vick, Adam “Pacman” Jones, and Ray Rice (among others).Īccording to public records examined by Forbes, Goodell was handsomely rewarded for navigating those various issues, as he took home a grand total of $212.5 million between 20. Goodell had to deal with a number of high-profile scandals and controversies over the course of his first decade as commissioner. He slowly worked his way up the ranks and found a mentor in the form of Paul Tagliabue, who replaced Rozelle in 1989 before ultimately handing the reins over to Goodell when he retired ahead of the 2006 season. Goodell has been working for the NFL in some capacity since securing an internship all the way back in 1982 at a time when Pete Rozelle worked in the position he currently occupies. Here’s how much Roger Goodell has raked as NFL Commissioner There’s no telling how much he’ll be earning when that contract is finalized, but it’s safe to say he doesn’t have to stress too much about his finances when you take a look at how much he’s earned over the course of his time with the NFL. Goodell’s current contract is set to expire in 2024, but he’ll likely be sticking around for a while as the league’s owners gear up to approve a new deal expected to stretch until at least 2027. The estimated $63.9 million Goodell earned in 2021 dwarfs the compensation handed out to the other men who serve at the helm of America’s “Big Four” (Rob Manfred is the runner-up with a comparatively paltry $17.5 million). That’s especially true when you’re talking about Roger Goodell, who is more than happy to have some fun at his own expense in exchange for the massive salary he rakes in on a yearly basis. Being the commissioner of a major sports league is a fairly thankless job, as anyone who signs up for that particular role knows they’re going to be subjected to an endless amount of scrutiny while receiving a minuscule amount of praise for performing their duties.Īfter all, we’re talking about a position where “Being booed whenever you appear in public” is basically part of the job description-although it’s a bit easier to deal with that particular downside when you consider the amount of money a commissioner typically makes. Top Open Source alternatives to Android (and iOS) I am going to list not one, not two, but several alternatives, Linux-based mobile OSes. So, what are the alternatives to Android? iOS? Maybe, but I am primarily interested in open-source alternatives to Android. Android is still an open-source project, after all.īut, due to the bundle of proprietary software that comes along with Android on consumer devices, many people don’t consider it an open source operating system. It’s no exaggeration to say that open source operating systems rule the world of mobile devices. |
